You can delete it, but it comes back every hour. Apple fascistically decided it is for my own good to fill my hard drive with this junk. I like to do my "time machine" backups once a day, when I feel like it. So then I did a little bit of internet checking, and it turns out with 10.13 and APFS, Apple implemented non-optional local backups. The free disk space goes down about 2 GB. I decided to move some stuff out of the way, so I deleted about 130 GB of files. I restored from my "time machine" backup, and filled about 91% of the new 500GB disk. ![]() ![]() I just got my iMac up and running again (having replaced Apple's defective power supply and nightmare 1TB fusion drive with third-party alternatives), so I formatted my new internal SSD with APFS.
